The duties of the Athletic Trainer (ATC) include prevention of athletic injuries, recognition, evaluation, and immediate care of athletic injuries, rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries, health care administration, and professional development and responsibility as specified in the Domains of the NATA Certified Athletic Trainer. The ATC serves as a liaison between physicians, coaches, athletes, and parents. The ATC ensures that players participate only when physically able and that any physician instructions are understood and followed. The ATC will coordinate with the Director of Athletics and Activities to ensure that the Athletic Training Room and all required events will be covered. The ATC also manages and administers the ImPACT concussion testing across the school.

The TRIA sports medicine team is proud to partner with Benilde St. Margaret’s to provide athletic training services for all student-athletes.

In order to provide quality care, please review the following:

  • It’s the athlete’s responsibility to report any injury or illness to the Athletic Trainer or coach.
  • It is the athlete’s responsibility to report for treatment in the Athletic Training Room (ATR) on time, so they can return to practice in a timely fashion.
  • If an athlete needs to see a physician, TRIA has provided excellent Team Physicians working with BSM.
  • Our Primary Physician is McKayla Schmitt, MD
  • Dr. Schmitt provides her services and expertise to all the athletes at BSM and will be on the sidelines at home varsity football games! Appointments can also be made for athletes to see a physician on a same day/next day basis by calling 952-806-5600.

  • TRIA features one of the top Sport Concussion programs in the region. They are one of the only clinics in the Midwest to focus on post-concussion rehabilitation specific to return to sport participation. Their Research driven approach makes them a great resource or option after concussion to make a full and safe return to sport.

Return to Play:

  • Return to play decisions will be based upon sound medical judgment with the athlete’s best interests in mind.
  • Return to play decisions after a concussion/head injury will follow the TRIA sport concussion protocol, relative to the needs of their sport following international research standards, timelines, and requirements.
  • Minnesota State High School League rules state that, if under a physician’s care for an injury/illness/surgery, the athlete will need a signed note from the physician regarding the athlete’s participation status in their respective sport. The note must be given to the ATC and the ATC must evaluate the injury before the athlete can resume participation. If the athlete is not seeing a physician, the return to play decision will be made by the ATC.
  • Return to play form
  • If a coach or athlete disregards a return-to-play decision, the school’s athletic director will be notified.

ImPACT Testing/Concussion Return To Play Guideline

Student-athletes involved in contact sports should complete ImPACT testing prior to participation in a contact sport. All athletes must be cleared by a physician or the Athletic Trainer before the return-to-play after sustaining a concussion.

Emergency Action Plan

Benilde St. Margaret’s has a written emergency action plan in place which will be followed in the event of a medical emergency. Emergency situations may arise at any time during athletic events. Expedient action must be taken in order to provide the best possible care to the victim. The development and implementation of an emergency action plan will help to ensure that the best care will be provided.
